Germany construction orders jump 23.0% in August 2026

German construction orders rose 23.0% in August 2026, the largest monthly gain since the series began in 1991, but building work fell 1.7% over the year.

The facts

  • Real new orders in German main construction rose +23.0% in August 2026 against July, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects.
  • The statistics office attributes the move to several large orders and calls it the highest seasonally adjusted monthly increase in the sector since the series began in 1991.
  • Civil engineering orders rose 31.6% on the month while building construction orders rose 12.4%.
  • Over the year, real orders rose 17.3% in total, but building construction fell 1.7% while civil engineering rose 36.4%.
  • Nominal orders were 23.8% higher than a year earlier, and nominal turnover rose 10.1% to 10.9 billion euros.
  • About 548,000 people worked in the sector in August, 1.5% more than a year earlier, and all figures cover establishments of firms with 20 or more employees.

What it means for your money

  • One record month does not add German homes. Orders rose on large civil engineering jobs, and building work is 1.7% lower than a year ago.
  • The release gives no separate residential figure at all. Building construction covers residential and non-residential together, so an investor cannot read a housing supply signal out of the 23.0%.
  • Costs are the channel that does reach a buyer. Nominal turnover rose 10.1% while real turnover rose 4.9%, a gap that shows how much of the money is price rather than output, and Glopra's Germany data put the median at 3,066 US dollars per square metre with a 4.1% gross rental yield.
  • Renovation and maintenance work is the channel that reaches an existing landlord. German builders took 17.3% more orders over the year while the workforce grew 1.5%, so a landlord commissioning building work now deals with contractors whose order books are fuller than a year ago.

What to watch

  • The German figures that bear on housing supply are building permits and residential construction prices, both reported separately. This release covers order intake only.
  • Large single orders make the monthly series volatile, which is why the statistics office also publishes a three-month comparison: 7.6% in total, 0.6% for building construction and 13.8% for civil engineering.
