Greece rents rise 5.9% in September 2026, housing costs up 14.7%

Greek dwelling rents in the price index rose 5.9% over the year in September 2026, while the whole housing group rose 14.7%, driven mainly by energy.

The facts

  • The Hellenic Statistical Authority published the September 2026 consumer price index on 9 October 2026. The overall index was 5.0% higher than in September 2025 and 2.1% higher than in August 2026.
  • The housing group, which comprises housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, was 14.7% higher than a year earlier and 2.0% higher than a month earlier.
  • Within that group the rentals-for-dwellings item rose +5.9% over the year.
  • Energy drove most of the group total: natural gas 55.2%, heating oil 53.2%, electricity 15.0% and solid fuels 7.0% over the year.
  • Repair and maintenance of the dwelling was 5.3% more expensive than a year earlier.

What it means for your money

  • Rents in Greece are growing faster than overall prices. The whole housing group of the index is rising far faster.
  • Rents actually paid rose +5.9% over the year against a 5.0% overall index, so rental income is running slightly ahead of general prices.
  • For an owner already letting in Greece, repair and maintenance cost 5.3% more than a year earlier, and the 14.7% rise in the index's housing group, driven mainly by energy, leaves less room for further rent increases.

What to watch

  • These figures measure rents inside a consumer price index rather than advertised rents or sale prices, and the group total is driven mainly by energy, with rents and dwelling services also contributing.
  • The release does not give a next publication date, and the energy items are what could move the group total again.
