Taiwan old-home renovation subsidy covers 45% of cost, October 2026
Taiwan will reopen its older-home retrofit scheme in 2027, paying 45% to 62% of the bill and up to NT$4.5 million for seismic strengthening work.
The facts
- The National Land Management Agency of Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior announced on 22 October that a second round of its older-home retrofit scheme will open county by county between January and May 2027.
- Subsidies awarded so far have ranged from NT$1 million to over NT$11 million per case, covering about 45% to 62% of total cost.
- For seismic strengthening of a private home the subsidy runs to 45% of the cost with a cap of NT$4.5 million, and can reach 85% for buildings assessed as potentially hazardous.
- Of 1,359 applications accepted so far, 1,285 were detached or townhouse properties and only 74 were apartment buildings; consultations have passed 26,000 visits.
- From round two, an apartment building qualifies if it repairs a single shared-space item, and Taipei City will restrict round two to apartment buildings only.
What it means for your money
- A retrofit on older Taiwanese stock now comes with up to 45% of the bill paid. That cuts the hidden capital spend behind a cheap-looking old building.
- Glopra's data records a 20% withholding on non-resident rental income in Taiwan and freehold granted on a reciprocity basis with approval of title acquisition required, so the subsidy only helps buyers whose nationality clears that test.
- For someone who already owns an apartment unit, the single-item rule is the change that matters: a building that could never assemble a full renovation package can now qualify on one shared-space repair.
What to watch
- Each county will announce its own round-two window between January and May 2027, and Taipei City's will be open to apartment buildings only.
- The announcement states no minimum building age and no budget figure for round two, so eligibility beyond the apartment rule is not yet defined.
